The Digital Guy blog
Bits and pieces about technology - DVD, BD, web, etc.
Tag >> BD
This will be the year that Hollywood and the CE industry attempt to finally embed Blu-ray into the consumers' consciousness, and they're going to do it with the MOST aggressive pricing we have yet seen. This bodes well for those of us who have been evangelizing publication on BD-ROM, as it may swell the ranks of those who can actually VIEW the great stuff you guys will be creating (or have created already).
There WILL be (count on it) a BOATLOAD of Blu-ray players on sale come this week and especially this coming (Black) Friday.
In casually perusing the advance notice of sale prices, I once again note, with some small alarm, that the cheapest players are NOT BD-Live capable - BUT there IS one small ray of sunshine!
Apparently, there is a $99 INSIGNIA player that will be on sale at Best Buy that includes not only BD-Live, but also streaming capability as well! http://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6707870.html?nid=4756&source=link&rid=5998531 THAT is the cheapest player I have seen that includes ALL of the advanced technology aspects of the BD spec.
Please spread the word to LOOK BEYOND PRICE when contemplating a BD player purchase - look for CAPABILITIES that ALLOW you to participate in the most advanced BD technology.
Of course, NONE of these players yet have Managed Copy! And I can't vouch for how the picture looks on the $99 Insignia ;-)
(It's always something, innit?)
I originally published this in August of last year, but in June 2009, fees for AACS were reduced dramatically, and I've been meaning to update this for a while - BCN
For many who are new to Blu-ray Disc (BD), the bewildering selection of licenses and fees are causing a lot of confusion. Unlike DVD, which had a fairly loose approach to licenses for content creators, there ARE some Blu-ray licenses that may not be obvious to all, even those who are experienced in DVD! I'll spend this post clarifying what you may be expect of licensing for BD usage.
I'll be on the Digital Production Buzz tomorrow (Thursday) with Larry Jordan and Michael Horton discussing the new "quick" Blu-ray features in Final Cut Studio 3, as well as BRAND NEW IDMA Blu-ray replication deals created especially for indie producers. These deals allow creation of 1000 retail-ready Blu-ray discs at unbeliveable prices, and with AACS licensing details administered by the replicator. Check out the show tomorrow...
Apple has released the new version of Final Cut Studio, and it has some interesting Optical Disc updates - NO, DVD Studio Pro does NOT do Blu-ray. But there IS a new command in FCP7 that provides a direct path to burning a simple Blu-ray disc, much like Toast 10. I'll have more on this in the future.
Are you in the Southern California area? Want to spend a few hours getting the most up-to-date information on the latest advances in Digital Media publishing using Blu-ray media or Blu-ray on DVD discs, as well as updates on Final Cut Pro and other Mac apps ? Join me at Larry Jordan's Santa Ana, CA Power Up seminar July 28th
If you're a Mac Blu-ray disc author, and have been wondering how you can create a BD CMF master folder for Blu-ray replication, well wonder no more. BluStreak Premaster was introduced at NAB 2009's FCPUG SuperMeet, and sneak-previewed at the IDMA Blu-ray day at NAB PPWC. It is yet another innovative program from the fertile programming mind of Larry Applegate, father of "DVD After Edit". BluStreak Premaster allows you to convert a Mac-authored BDMV project that would ordinarily only be publishable on BD- or DVD- recordable media into BD CMF form, so it can be delivered to a Blu-ray replicator for mass publication on BD-ROM or as a BD on DVD-ROM.
I've mentioned several times that Toast 10 includes a number of prebuilt Menu Templates, in both 4x3 and 16x9 aspect ratios, but it's a little difficult to actually SEE the menus in their real size, since they never are shown in anything larger than a small thumbnail. Hmm... what to do? OK - got it... I've created a Toast HD Menu Showcase, to display all of the 16x9 menu template designs in a much larger size than possible to view within the application. Here is a cool light-box driven gallery of the 24 different HD menu template styles - Just click the thumbnail below to launch the gallery. Navigate at the page top.
NO, it's not an April Fool joke. Some days, I just shake my head and think, "is there anything ELSE that could POSSIBLY be done to slow down the adoption rate of Blu-ray Disc?" I mean, if the two-year + format war with HD DVD wasn't enough, and sky-high Blu-ray player prices and incompatibility on playback wasn't enough, and the continuing AACS fee insanity for replication wasn't enough, what's left? Well, how about this: Netflix has apparently determined that its Blu-ray subscriptions are enough of a success to allow it to RAISE IT'S MONTHLY Blu-ray PREMIUM PRICE. I kid you not - here's the Reuters news link
I've been adding new stuff to the site this week and last, including the State of Blu-ray Podcasts I did with Larry Jordan earlier this year. I'm currently working on some video tutorials for Blu-ray Disc authoring using a variety of applications - First Toast 10, then Adobe Encode CS4. I'm using a new Mac application, called Screenflow, which is nothing short of amazing!
Have you gone out to buy a Blu-ray Player and found such a confusing selection of manufacturers and buzzwords that your head hurt? Well, I'm not surprised. The Internet has given us a great tool to be bale to do pre-sale "legwork" without even having to be walking (or standing for that matter). But ONE thing has got me concerned - retailers are advertising the living daylights out of the PRICE of a Blu-ray Player, but make it virtually IMPOSSIBLE for you to easily determine what PROFILE level the player is. And, in Blu-ray PLAYER PROFILE is EVERYTHING!
